WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.22.17.24 apparently tests its version of Story with emoji, the ability to respond to status. There are now eight pre-defined emojis that you can choose from. Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes, Face with Tears of Joy, Face with Open Mouth, Crying Face, With folded hands, Clapping, Party Popper, and Hundred Points (Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes, Face with Tears of Joy, Face with Open Mouth, Crying Face, Folded Hands, Clapping Hands, Party Popper, and Hundred Points) are among the available emoji.

To react to a status with emoji instead of text, just swipe up on the status page and you should see a list of emojis right above the text response option. It is very similar to Instagram functionality.
